What OneNote's Math and Replay features say about the spotty state of Windows Ink

PCWorld

One of the most significant features of Windows 10's Anniversary Update was the addition of pen computing, known as Windows Ink, which we criticized as falling short of the average consumer's needs. We don't know whether any new inking features will be announced at Microsoft's Windows event on Wednesday (or the event that follows on November 2). Recently, however, we took a deeper dive into the capabilities, when we tried the new Math and Replay features within Windows 10's OneNote UWP app. Math translates and solves inked equations, while Replay records your series of ink strokes and can play them back. But the devil's in the details, and the challenges of both features show how Windows Ink is struggling with the realities of handwriting recognition and data wrangling.

What To Expect From Microsoft's Surface PC Event On October 26th

International Business Times

Microsoft's press event in New York City is almost here, and that means there are plenty of rumors to be excited about. The company announced the event earlier this month, only giving details like the place, date and time. Microsoft is working on a brand new Surface PC, but this time, it's getting rid of the kickstand and keyboard case. The new Surface PC will be an all-in-one desktop rather than a touchscreen laptop. The new Surface PC is expected to include a large display that will lay flat on a desk.

Does your webcam keep crashing? Claims Windows 10 update breaks 'millions' of connected cameras

Daily Mail - Science & tech

The Windows 10 Anniversary Update, the largest update to the PC software since it launched last year, was hailed as the fir major update. However, many users have discovered their webcams no longer work after the update. As part of a security crackdown, Microsoft limited the type of encoding webcams can use - and it is causing many to crash. As part of a security crackdown, Microsoft limited the type of encoding webcams can use for video streams - and it is causing many to crash. 'If your webcam has stopped functioning since the release of the Anniversary update, you are not alone but the good news is a fix is coming, hopefully in September,' said Brad Sams of Thurrot, which first noticed the issue. Windows no longer allows USB webcams to use MJPEG or H264 encoded streams and is only allowing YUY2 encoding.

Windows 10 anniversary update being rolled out to users

Daily Mail - Science & tech

The Windows 10 Anniversary Update, the largest update to the PC software since it launched last year, has become available to consumers today. The global update sees Microsoft's virtual assistant Cortana become more central, being used as part of any search, while a new feature called Windows Ink enables users to annotate on their screens more freely, and across different apps, with a stylus. The Anniversary Update comes just days after Microsoft ended a free upgrade program for users eligible to update to Windows 10, which was released in July last year. More than 350 million devices have been upgraded to Windows 10 since the software was released last year. Windows 10 Build 14352 lets Windows Insiders run two antivirus programs on their PC

PCWorld

With Microsoft's Insider Preview Build 14352 of Windows 10, released on Thursday afternoon, new features include the ability to ask Cortana for specific songs and ink reminders in Windows Ink's Sticky Notes. The most interesting addition is this: You can now run two antivirus programs on your PC. Gamers, too, receive a boost: full-screen Windows Game bar support for some perpetual hits like League of Legends and World of Warcraft. There's one catch: Just as Google requires a subscription to Google Play Music to process specific song requests, you must have a subscription to Microsoft's Groove Music to enable the new request-line feature in Cortana. Why this matters: Microsoft hasn't boosted Windows 10's capabilities dramatically with this new Insider build.

Hands-on with Windows 10's new Windows Ink

PCWorld

This summer, a spate of new features are headed to Windows 10 by way of the Anniversary Update, Microsoft's next major revision to the OS. Chief among the additions is Windows Ink, an experience specifically designed for digital pen users. The full Ink experience is still months away--longer, if you wait on the fruits of Microsoft's partnership with Wacom, which will reportedly yield a special Ink pen by the holidays. But thanks to the recent, massive Windows 10 Build 14322 that Microsoft released to its Insider beta testers, we've had a chance to try out several aspects of Windows Ink, including Ink Workspace, Sketchpad, Sticky Notes, and more. Click the new pen icon to launch the Windows Ink Workspace apps. If you haven't actually worked with digital ink before, relax: Windows Ink is an optional way to interact with Windows, in much the same way you can use either voice or keyboard to query Cortana.

Is Microsoft shifting its focus again, or losing it?

#artificialintelligence

"We, as a company, are optimistic about what technology can do for us." Those were among the first words said by Microsoft's CEO, Satya Nadella, as he took the stage at the company's Build 2016 keynote. If that statement seems overly broad, it's not the fault of Nadella's speechwriter. The company's keynote was a reminder that Microsoft has its hands on many tech projects, and sees bright days ahead. But much of that future may not involve things you might find on an average store shelf.
